Exploring Shamian Island

Wed. 6/3/09

Hallelujah! We (Tim & Marg) finally got a good 8 hours of sleep! The kids have been sleeping well all along, of course. Went down to the breakfast buffet at the hotel. We have the non-smoking section to ourselves. We enjoy eating a leisurely breakfast with the other two adoptive families. The hotel serves both American and Chinese food. We load up our plates every day and go back for seconds and thirds. Both Jenna and Sarah love eating the watermelon. They can’t get enough of it. Jenna is in heaven eating noodles every day for breakfast and supper. Sarah likes noodles and rice dishes. She likes to feed herself. She initially balked at wearing a bib, but now she’s O.K. with it.

Took some photos in the hotel lobby after breakfast. The girls are color coordinated, but Ba-Ba is not (guess he didn’t get the memo). After breakfast, Sarah had another meltdown when we got back to the room. Going back to the hotel room seems to trigger her crying.

We quickly decided to go out for a walk and some shopping with the Barths and Bradshaws. It’s extremely hot and humid today. Everybody’s sticky and moving slowly. We wander into shops to see what they have and wander back out. We decide to go to the White Swan Hotel to cool off. They have an indoor waterfall and ponds with large colored fish. The kids enjoy watching the fish. We take group and family photos in front of the waterfall and on the famous red couches. Sarah loves running all over the hotel. Tim and I tag team on her because she’s constantly moving. She’s very fast . . . if you don’t keep your eye on her she can be gone in a flash. She loves to imitate whatever Jenna is doing. Sometimes that’s a good thing and sometimes not.

By 2:00 pm we’re back at the hotel. Sarah is crying in the room again. We try to distract her and she falls asleep. By 3:30 pm, it’s raining and thundering. We get in the van for our appointment at the police station with the other adoptive families. They need to video tape the kids with us. One more step completed!

At bedtime tonight, we sang songs and kissed good night. This is the first night that Sarah didn’t fuss about going to bed. Yippee!!

On Monday, Tim moved the twin beds together in the kid’s room to make one gigantic bed. He’s been sleeping with Jenna and Sarah.

Gotta get to bed. It’s still thundering and raining.
